That’s why we were incredibly proud to see our Managing Partner, Keller Caubarreaux, deliver the keynote speech at the D51 School District’s annual Scholar's Lunch last week. This event honors graduating seniors who have earned an outstanding 4.0 GPA or higher, recognizing the grit, intellect, and dedication it takes to reach that level of academic success.
Held in Grand Junction, Colorado, the event was filled with proud families, educators, and the brightest young minds in Mesa County. Keller, who also serves as Vice President of the D51 Foundation, spoke from the heart, blending humor, inspiration, and hard-won wisdom to send the Class of 2025 off with a message of purpose and authenticity.
Honoring a Room Full of Rockstars
Keller began his speech by acknowledging the magnitude of what these students—and their families and teachers—have achieved. “Navigating these years takes serious talent and determination,” he said, referring to not just the academic rigor but also the resilience required to graduate at the top of the class in today’s world.
He reminded students that the year 2025 is no ordinary milestone: it marks 80 years since the end of World War II, 50 years since the founding of Microsoft, and 20 years since YouTube launched. These anniversaries are more than trivia—they are reminders that resilience, innovation, and connection shape the world we live in and offer powerful lessons for the road ahead.
Life Lessons from the Courtroom: Keller’s GRACE Framework
Known for his courtroom prowess, Keller offered a surprising but relatable analogy: jury selection—known in legal terms as voir dire. He explained how this process, much like life, is about uncovering biases, building trust, and making decisions based on both logic and emotion.
From there, he invited the audience to participate in a mini “voir dire” exercise to explore five key principles for living a meaningful life—summarized by the acronym GRACE:
- Growth Mindset: Embrace the power of “yet.” You may not be there yet, but growth is always possible.
- Release Control: Life is unpredictable. Focus on how you respond when things don’t go according to plan.
- Adapt from Mistakes: Fail forward. Mistakes are not failures; they are data points that lead to success.
- Commit to Authenticity: Be yourself, fully and unapologetically. Comparison is the thief of joy.
- Engage with Passion: Follow what excites you. Passion is the fuel for perseverance and discipline.
Keller brought these points to life through stories from his own journey—detailing everything from courtroom experiences to humorous family dinners—and underscored how these principles have helped him succeed not only as a trial attorney but as a community leader, parent, and neighbor.
A Legacy of Community Impact
Keller’s connection to D51 runs deep. His late stepfather, Roy Blythe, founded the D51 Foundation in 2010—a legacy Keller carries on with pride. Under his leadership and continued community support, the foundation has now raised over $3 million to support local educators and students.
“Part of me believes that Roy’s dedication to D51 has somehow made a difference in each of your lives,” Keller said to the students. “And now it’s my turn to attempt to do the same.”
